Google plugs into an Enterprising partnership

Google is giving its employees a free ride. The company announced June 18 that it has partnered with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to provide up to 100 plug-in hybrid vehicles to its employees as part of Google.org’s RechargeIT initiative to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Enterprise currently has 3,300 hybrid rental vehicles, the largest fleet of its kind in the U.S. The Google agreement marks the first time Enterprise has partnered with a corporation to provide a fleet comprised solely of plug-in hybrid vehicles.

“We are proud to take part with Google in this innovative car-sharing initiative,” says Group Corporate Account Manager Eric Schwarz. “We think this partnership will serve as a model for other companies. With this program, we are sending a strong message that we are committed to embracing new alternative-fuel technologies and making them available to our customers.”

The Google fleet is available to employees who use alternative transportation to get to work. Those who enroll in the program can make an online reservation to drive a plug-in hybrid seven days a week, 24 hours a day. The program is free during work hours to participants, who it is anticipated will drive the hybrids off campus to get to doctor’s appointments, pick up a sick child, attend meetings or run errands.
